My doctor has a dry sense of humor. Last week he told me that I had "suffered the prescribed amount of time for the insurance company to approve an MRI" so we can find out what's going on. nnChances are it's a bulging disc pushing on a nerve. The current thought is that it is a bulging disc or something on that order and the MRI would help him see what treatments might be more helpful. The MRI is today. I hope they find something that is treatable, but not so serious that I end up in the hospital on an emergency basis.

My dad broke his neck when I was a little kid. After two surgeries he was left with hardware mis-driven into his disks and bone spurs growing over the hardware and surrounding vertebrae. He recently had a third surgery to remove all the old hardware and fuse the vertebrae around the damaged disks. Although he can't work, he is still able to walk, clean his house, cook himself dinner, etc.nnThe point of my story is that, although a lot of pain is involved with damaged spinal columns, I can only think that living with some pain is probably better than the alternative of paralysis.nnI do hope your healing goes well and they can find a nice fix for you with the MRI.

I like your doctor's candor, Aitana. Still, I am surprised that physical therapy preceded a diagnostic MRI. Having had back trouble due to a herniated disk, and having for the most part recovered, without surgery, I came to value some yoga positions that produced relief. I still have the condition, but unless I am foolish about knowingly doing the few actions that aggravate it, I am relatively pain free. Should you at some point want to try some "positions" I would be glad to share a couple.nnIn any event, my thoughts are with you.nnEyesore

Apparently the insurance requires the least invasive and most conservative options first, and to them the MRI is unnecessary unless the PT doesn't work *shrug*nnThe results: I have an extruded disc that is touching the S1 nerve root. I saw a specialist today and the first thing we're going to try is to do a steroid epidural. The odds are around 50 - 70% that it will actually fix the problem, but the alternative is surgery. It might just make things feel better for a while and then the problem might come back. Won't know until we try it. I go in for the procedure on June 3.
