The Roster

Postby Aitana » Fri Dec 14, 2007 6:52 pm

The roster on this website is useful as it is, but it can be a very powerful tool if we as individuals update our information in it. Most of you probably aren't familiar with what it can do. Here are a couple of examples.

What if you want to know who can make your favorite elixir or potion? Go here: http://thenyx.org/roster/index.php?p=guild-madeby&proffilter=Alchemy&a=g:1. Not only will it tell you who can make it, it will also tell you what the ingredients are and what the different items do. The same is true for any profession.

Want to know who has keys for instances? Go to http://thenyx.org/roster/index.php?p=guild-keys&a=g:1 for the old instances in Azeroth or go to http://thenyx.org/roster/index.php?p=guild-Key_BC&a=g:1 for Burning Crusade instances.

Let's say I want information for one of the quests I am on. I can go to http://thenyx.org/roster/index.php?p=char-info-quests&a=c:82 and it provides me with quick links to WoWHead, Thottbot, Allakazam, and WoW Digger without doing any searches.

Do you want to know who has quests in Auchenai Crypts? Go to http://thenyx.org/roster/index.php?p=realm-questlist&a=c:82&zoneid=Auchenai%20Crypts

Those are just a very few examples of how our roster can be used. These tools are nice, but they are only really useful if people update their character information on the roster.

Naturally the next question is how to update character information on the roster. Well, it does require a mod. You can get it at http://www.rpgoutfitter.com/Addons/CharacterProfiler.cfm.

You don't have to run this mod all the time, but you do have to run it before you update your character information on this site. After you download an install the mod, to update your character information, here's what you do:

Log into WoW with the Character Profiler mod running.

Open up your spell book and then close it.

Open up each sheet for your professions and close it. For example in my case, I open up my alchemy, cooking, and first aid pages. I don't have to do anything for fishing or herbalism since they don't have recipes.

Open up your character sheet and then close it.

Open up your quest log and then close it.

    Log off your character.

Repeat each item on the list above for each character in the guild. After you're done gathering the information on each character, close WoW completely. If you leave the mod running all the time, these things happen normally over the course of playing the game and you don't have to think about them. If you prefer not to run any more mods than absolutely required, you will have to remember to go through the steps above so that you can update your information.

At this point the Character Profiler mod has created a file called CharacterProfiler.lua located in C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\{your account name here}\SavedVariables. There is another copy of that file in the mod subdirectory, but it is empty. All that's nice, but it doesn't do much good until you upload the data to the roster, and that is not automatic. You have to go to the update page to do it.

To update your character's information go to http://thenyx.org/roster/index.php?p=update&a=g:1. See the picture below for which fields must be filled out. I use the Browse button to find the file. After you put the file path and name in the Character Profiler field, click on "Update" and be patient. When it is done, you will be able to find your character's information in the roster.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Thanks for the instructions. It turns out that reading them can be useful. Now, I might be able to get myself updated.
