Core Battle Groups, and Proactive Involvements

THIS THREAD HAS BEEN MOVED FROM THE OFFICERS FORUM:
Guild Meeting needs to be called to go over our new interview proceedure, and do promotions again. Deminaria and Solandria approached me last night regarding a venue for the next meeting. They wish it to be in the Lower City Tavern, for the meeting; then after the meeting, entertainment by the Troll Chieftains, then drinks and dancing afterwards. They plan on serving drinks among the attendees and are quite looking forward to helping out.
Also, we have a boat load of new 80s and VERY soon to be 80s that we need to start thinking about helping gear up, for they are all drooling to start raiding.
The past two days I have been working with two of the new 80s that Silmeria already turned down for raiding spots due to improper gear (mixture of offense / defense and greens to low blues) (Samusa-DPS and Cariocenius-Tank) running heroics. But we need more of our geared 80s proactively involved in Heroics running with the new 80s or we will be flooded very shortly with very dissappointed folk that can't go in to 10man content yet due to gear.
We probably also need to consider stepping up our 10man content schedule very soon, to accomodate so many new 80s about to flood us......
Feast or Famine. But forewarned is forearmed !!

One disturbing trend I have witnessed is the silence in guild chat when somebody asks for non-heroic runs or for help with quests. I know that we like people to be self sufficient and all, but the occasional request for information or assistance should not be met with stony silence. I respond. Lah responds. But for example when I was on last night, Zindia had a simple request and I was the only one that responded. There were 20 people on line. Surely somebody else could have said something. Even a simple "I don't know" or "Sorry, I can't help with that today" is better than silence. If this were only a rare occurrence, I wouldn't say anything. It takes all of us, not just the officers to make Nyx a warm and friendly place to be.
Another thing I have seen lately is related to the first. It has to do with Northrend instances. It is as if there is a type of snobbery developing. If a guildie asks to run a Northrend instance, the first question they get in response is often whether or not it is a heroic. That's a fair question; it's very reasonable for a person to want to know what the request is for. If the person making the request says that it's for a regular instance, all too often there is no response at all after that, not a "no", not another word at all. It is as if we treat people that aren't requesting heroics as if they were lepers or something.
Both these things must stop or we will lose good people!
Another comment about running non-heroics. A brand new 80 isn't ready for heroics, much less raiding. We have a bunch of them too. If we want to progress in raiding, we need them to get gear and it starts with non-heroics. We need to make sure, to the degree we can influence this, that they are running with guildies to build a sense of belonging, teamwork and getting them prepared for heroics and raiding.

Yesterday, I took steps to address some of this. I didn't ask permission, but already instituted a "Classics Night" on Thursday.
I recruited Lorael and Hapkuta to be my Core ring leaders, and we will start in the Swamp of Sorrows at Sunken Temple. Once I have that Core group up and running (with their own healer and dedicated regulars in it), I will move to develop a second Core group for Classics night. IF we can develope five or six Core groups, that will go far to relieve some of that which you speak. And that is precisely the reason I targeted mid 50 range to begin with.
Also, I will be pounding on the Geared 80s to be proactive in stepping forward to help the lower levels gear up. As you said, there has been a deplorable lack of stepping up to the plate on the parts of our geared people.
Oh, and about that Snobbery. It isn't just now developing. It has been present ever since I came on board. And a confrontation about it between myself and Barefoot is what caused my attitude about Julia in the first place.
She called me a whiner because I complained to her about precisely what you just said; about the appauling lack of participation and information when a lower level has the courage to even ask anything what so ever in guild chat, and is met with dead silence, or "Sorry, it's not a heroic, I can't be bothered."
I deleted nearly every group quest I ever had, as I was growing up, because there was simply never any one willing to lend aid. And I never would PuG or group outside of Nyx. So, I grew up totally alone, for the most part.
As Howling would say: /snort !!

This is a thread that would be good to have in the publc forum. So that the few of us who read the forums will know that it's a problem and we want it addressed.
Lah I'm not sure what groups your forming. Low levels for classic dungeons?
Last night I formed that herioc HoL, taking Cari-something in with us. I knew it would be a gearing up run for him, after a quick inspection of his gear. He had 5 empty gem slots (one of them a meta) so I took 4 green cut gems that he could use and just gave them to him before we started. Unfortunately he didn't get any u[grades other then badges.
More of those kind of runs where we take some uber dps and good heals and tank to gear someone up are definitely a good idea. Add to that someone like me, Kargh, Howling, or anyone who feels confident to suggest gear upgrades as it relates to spec to look over the new guildie. Lah, myself or any enchanter could also suggest enchants for decent gear that isn't enchanted - and send the guildie to buy mats (bank mats should be reserved for shadows and above imo).
But most importantly EVERYONE should respond to gchat questions. If I don't it's because i didn't see the question, just fyi.
(( I say copy this thread to the sanctuary and rename it something eye catching ))

I agree, and I had been working with both Samusa and Cario, the past two days. And I am moving this Thread to Sanctuary now, per your reasoning.
And Yes, Classics Night (Thursday) aimed at mid level folk, and Instances of the same level: to get them used to an Instance invironment, and hopefully to develop some tight core battle groups within that age span.

This post makes some excellent points - I suggest making it a sticky (it was buried way down on my topic list below older posts - maybe there's something funky about my forum settings).
I'll sign up for some healing on Classics night. It seems to me that we have enough high-level people so that we could set up rotations to help mid-levels. It shouldn't take more than one or two high-levels to take 3 or 4 mid-levels through, say, Sunken Temple. Presumably, we're not talking about 4 high levels blazing a path through ST with a 50 running after us watching and collecting XP - that's not much of a learning experience for the 50. But an ST group with a single or two high-level player(s) should easily succeed, and if all high-levels agree to help out once a month, everyone benefits without much "sacrifice" (for lack of a better word - I know it's not the right word) of time by the high levels.
We could also then ask the mid-levels to similiarly help lower-levels. I'm not sure how many of the below-50 members are inactive alts or what-not, but it benefits the guild, obviously, to have everyone moving up the chain.
I'd also suggest a kangaroo court for these runs, with fines going to the GB. If, say, I'm running 4 mid-levels through ST and we wipe, I should be fined. Or if I see the tank make a fundamental mistake, he should be fined. Or the dps steals aggro - fine. Or if someone fails to make that cliff-jump in Wailing Caverns - fine. Something to add an additional element of fun.
I recently rolled an alt (a troll rogue, for anyone who followed my "What's the opposite of a blood-elf holy priest?" on /gchat recently) that I'm trying to level to the guild minimum. It would be great for him to have occasional runs with the guild, too. The more high-level characters we have, the more options we have for raids or PVP runs.
Anyway, sign me up!

I can solo every single classic 5-man instance. However, if it is a first-run I would prefer to wait until they have been with at least one level-appropriate group. Alts: Just hit me up. If we need another healer, I can clean the cobwebs off of my priest.

Thankee, both of you. And Yes, Leo: Clean the cobwebs off your priest.
And No, Classic Night is not intended for a pack of 80s to run a middle aged character through as a token run. Rather, one high level, helping to develop core mid and upper level groups for the ultimate purpose of each core group standing alone, eventually, as they meld together, into a solid raiding team.
You have both stepped forward, and I will be calling on you as we expand this new project.

I tried to sign up for the ST run tonight but I don't fall under the level cap. In any event, I'll be there.
And for the raid on IF Friday night ...

About to fix Raidar level caps now. Thomas thankee for stepping forward. I need you to lead a run on Zul 'Farak, while I run Sunken Temple. Looks like fun for all !!
