In-character guild chat

When you speak in character in guild chat, what is your explanation for it?

My take on it is that our hearthstones become linked when we join the guild, and the hearthstones act as guild walkie-talkies so to speak. To me in-character conversation and what can be conveyed by tone of voice makes sense in guild chat, but emotes that require the others to see them do not since in my mind we are not physically present with each other in guild chat.

I know that not everybody sees things the same way I do. I would love to hear other people's thoughts on how you view in-character guild chat when you participate in it, I would also love to hear from people that do not speak in character in guild chat on why they do not.

Here's mine:

When I yell, I yell so loud people in Icecrown can hear it... even if I'm in Tanaris.

Edit: In general, I try to stay OOC in guild chat since I see /g more as a means of communication between members, although once and a while if there is RP going on in guild chat I'll join in. I like to try to keep my RP limited to in-person encounters though by only doing it in /s and /y, or /me, etc. To be honest, whenever I use /g for anything but OOC, I feel like I'm breaking character. : (

I did not mean to spark such a controversial discussion. I prefer to stay IC when in guild chat. If I am speaking OOC, I use the (( ooc )) conventions.

This is separate conversation from the issue you are referring to, Leo.

So, Leo, what's your take on speaking IC in guild chat? I'm sure you don't think you're yelling that far ;)

The explanation for why a guild's chat is in-character depends on the guild. Most people go with the "Colored Stones" Idea.

Guild Chat is the "Green Stone" or "Guild Stone", The "Blue Stone" is party chat, etc. GnomeTech actually uses engineering-made communicators. In Venom Dynasty, its our snake pets which we use to communicate telepathically like how a wizards familiar works. The explanation can very depending on the flavor you are going for.

I only really RP with /say. For me, having been in so many rp guilds before where telepathy was the reasoning behind gchat, I find the telepathy thing kinda old and impersonal.

Impersonal....

How many of you can easily say they've had some extensive roleplay with my characters? How many know at least a little lore behind everything they do? Why is Tsaphaan a goblin engineer? Why is he an engineer, period? Who even knew he had a shrunken troll head that he ties to his armor or wears as a necklace?

Doubtful many of you know some of the better, more quirky details about each others' characters.
We should fix that.

Anyway, much of what I say is OOC in Gchat, only because it's where I go to talk to you all as a person. However, if there's some decent gchat rp going on, I won't hesitate to jump in.. just don't assume I'm in character all the time.

Download the MyRolePlay mod on curse. Lets you make a character profile that other people with the mod can see. It's a required mod in Venom Dynasty, easy to use as well.

I'd never heard of that one, I'll have to grab it. I use FlagRSP2, which pretty much does the same thing. BUt still, to let more people know I RP, I'll gladly grab another AddOn, assuming they don't conflict.

As for me and gchat, I try to be somewhat in character in it, using brackets when I can. I'm always in character in /say, for sure, but gchat seems casual enough that I don't really sweat it. I know some people dislike having multiple channels to follow, but we want to encourage gchat as IC, it may necessitate another room for OOCness. That's what I'd recommend at least, and I certainly wouldn't mind.

They are compatible mods, you can see FlagsRSP with MRP, it is just that MRP has more space for details.

If I'm on Jeoy, its an engineered device. Not sure what kind though, maybe a cellphone :P.

On Mehtahz it's telepathy through contact with the Naaru and the light, allowing him to link up with other guild mates.
