A New Roleplaying Initiative

So, Miaoyin and I were talking about the general state of RP on Emerald Dream yesterday. I remember that over a year ago, ED was one of the most amazing and immersive environment I'd ever played in. A small alt I made to examine the community found that the majority of people walking around Orgrimmar were willing to at least role play a greeting.nnToday, most people on ED are indifferent to role play, some are outright hostile to the idea. The most common response I get when I attempt to role play a greeting is "lol." And we've all been victims of abuse by non-rpers, so no need to discuss it in-depth.nnPerhaps the saddest aspect of this problem is that a great deal of our server's population has very little idea what role playing actually involves.nnSo, I propose that eager role players from Nyx, and possibly even other Horde guilds that are members of the Assembly, host a series of "seminars" around the game world to explain what role playing is and show people how to do it.nnEach "seminar" would consist of a short explanation of what role playing is, a short "play" showing a typical scenario in which two or more people might role play in game, a question and answer session, and then a special segment where we either invite members of the audience to role play with us on stage, have a give away with items people might use to rp, explain about how to write a character background and addons people use for role playing, or anything else we can think of.nnI understand that because of the Alliance's tendency to relentlessly troll horde players engaged in any sort of activity on this server, these events couldn't be held in contested areas. Still, I think that by hosting events in high-traffic, horde controlled areas, we can reach a substantial segment of the population.nnSo, any additional ideas on how to implement a program like this? Would anyone be interested in helping out, or coordinating support from other guilds?

Here here! I am currently trying to liven up the RP within the guild, myself! Either way, if you wish to start out running these, and need some help, I will gladly assist you!

I'll do what I can to help you out. Let's talk more about how you want to implement this and talk to Lah about when we can put it on the schedule.

Count me in, any time. Happy to bump any G&N activity for an RP Event to support this cause, and can work it in as a permament session each week if you wish to host it. No worries.nnSounds like fun, and there will be a LOT of new people that have just received WoW from Father Christmas. I say pick 'em young, and raise 'em to suit yourselves. *grins at the recruitment possibilities and fresh new faces in the Tribe*nnCheers!nLahn8)

nnWell, the kind of role playing we'd be showing off could take a darker tone, but generally we'll just be showing them how your average day-to-day rp interaction out in the world goes. How to ask a mage for water, how to ask if they've seen any alliance around, congratulating them for downing a particularly ferocious mob, that sort of thing. nnThat being said, if you've got any ideas for anything more dark and mysterious, feel free to throw them out. After a little bit more organizing, I was going to go ahead and write out all the rp "skits." Possibly using the storyteller addon.

I would really enjoy seeing this idea take off. I believe a few of the biggest obstacles for RP on any server are the fear of "not doing it right" or having your attempts at "doing it" be rejected. Perhaps creating a safety bubble for new people to experiment in would alleviate some of the pressure created by these situations.nnI believe we should begin at the beginning, and by that, I mean within Nyx itself. Now I am a relatively new member myself, so everything I'm writing may just be observations of the current climate of the guild. That being said, we have a core of RP'ers, who, in my opinion, feel in the minority. So much so that they perhaps curb thier natural instinct to stay In Character at all times. An even more intense example would be Warzen who's said that he's "given up trying" to RP Warzen because his dark tones and evil nature were rejected or ignored by Guild memebers. I didn't witness this first hand, I was only told by him. I'm still waiting for him to give it another go "wink wink", because I'm sure Swanthula would love a dialogue with Warzen about the currency of souls and the integrity of his own! These are the types of people we need to nourish. Who wants 100 people with the same character? The same voices? We need to cultivate original characters within the Guild, by simply listening to them. Interacting with them...allowing them to explore thier character and, in turn, explore our own.nnBy the way Heartholm, I am loving and appreciate the character you are creating. The interaction I had with you at the Tribal congregation, as well as the journal entries, have painted Heartholm to be the picture of a travelling Bard. A chronicler or perhaps an aspiring minstrel. Gathering tales around Azeroth and spreading them. I've been enjoying it!nnAnyway, the best way we could spread the word of RP is by simply doing it a lot more. If you are standing in Orgrimmar with any number of Nyx why not stay IC? People will see it and notice it. It's unignorable. Of course the jeers and lol's will be there, but even if one person see's it that wants to RP...we might have a new recruit. When a new person to ED asks "what are a few of the best RP guilds here" Nyx will be on the tongue of those who answer him.nAm I ranting? Maybe. I will show up and help with this idea. I think it's pretty cool. I fear I might sound harsh for saying this but, here goes:What business do "we" have giving lessons, when we so rarely live by example?

Hmm... more rp initiative in general is a good thing, however, I don't know if I agree that classes or lessons are the way to go. Personally, I've been on ED since game launch, and have been through it's various incarnations/stages of rp. In that time I feel I've witnessed what has contributed to the decline of rp here, and it's basically two things for this server. The first thing is Blizzard's marketing success. The truth is, a lot of kids like to play video games, but a lot of kids don't like to rp. Rp takes a level of maturity that the masses are not interested in. WOW is no longer a game that only appeals to people attracted to a live D&D style game (like say Neverwinter Nights was for a time or Eve) where the majority of people you run into are comfortable with some level of rp. It now has mass appeal and mass players, most of which are just desperately trying not to be "noobs", and grind for gear. I'm not saying that there aren't some new players in this new generation that might want to rp, but what I'm saying is I feel we are better off encouraging the pocket community of rp'ers that are already out there. Creating more opportunity for these new players to witness and possibly get involved in rp seems wiser than preaching to the masses on this server. nnThe second thing that has contributed to a decline in rp on the Emerald Dream (Alliance side anyways) is the imperialistic nature of a particular guild and it's leaders. I don't need to go into it but attempting to absorb or destroy any and all rp guilds on a server has led to a lot of disconnect for the rp'ers on this server. This is a guild of people whose leaders are extremely dedicated to total domination of any and all rp Allaince side, and the time and focus they put into achieving that goal is disturbing. We should always be vigilint against anything like this Horde side because things like that can be extremely destructive and very hard to reverse in my opinion. Their influence has attempted to crawl over faction lines and influence things horde side as well, but thankfully it seems good leadership from people like Aitana will deflect their efforts. nnNow I'm getting off topic; apologies! Back to the point, I think Nyx living and leading by example is a first step to encouraging rp on this server. Holding events, encouraging communication between the rp guilds that do exist and making the rp community here enriched and fun stands to do the most to water and nourish the scene. Having Flagrsp active on all our accounts and answering those trade calls when people ask "How is the rp on this server?" and "Where can I find an rp guild here?" can really go a mile in my opinion.
