RP Help For Beginners! nnFirstly, there is a misconception about rp that the term “rp” refers to an emo like act that your character can choose to turn on and off and/or participate in. For example someone might say “I’m going to go rp”, and then said character travels to a location and talks/emotes about drama. This is a false assumption and frankly, an unsuccessful way to rp. nnRP (when most successful/enjoyable) is the way you play a game (in this example, World Of Warcraft). It’s very simple, but it does take dedication and focus. When you take this attitude, RP isn’t an act that you perform, it’s a state of being/playing, and you are “In Character” from the moment you log in to the moment you log out. Say, Yell, Party, Whisper or any other interactions you have can be said in your character’s voice. nnHelpful Hints and No-No’snn1. The use of (( then fill in the blank out of character stuff)). This should only be used when speaking to someone in a whisper. When used in /say or /guild chat it is understood by the majority of people to be disruptive. ANYTHING you need to say and or ask in guild chat can be said from your character’s point of view if given some thought. Some examples below:nnWhat time is the raid tonight? = What time will the assault on Icecrown Citadel begin?nI’m getting camped! = I am under attack! I need aid!nDoes anyone want to do some heroics? = Are there any interested in gathering badges with me?nMy girlfriend just said I have to *fill in the blank* = I am distracted for a moment- I shall return.n“Did you see the movie blah blah?” Or “I like mortal combat blah blah”= this is just dumb, go to trade chatnn2. Symbols and smileys are no good. : ) : ) ~ <: . nIt’s just as easy to type *grins mischievously at so-and-so*nn3. Whenever text from your character shows up on screen whether it is in a say bubble or guild chat, it is assumed your character is talking. If you want to emote something, you can type /em and then describe what you want your character to do, and an emote will show up by your character. nnIf I type /em looks at Onielle strangely, then what will show up is = Dracmorda looks at Onielle strangely.nn4. In guild chat, when text from your character shows up beside your name it is assumed your character is talking from it’s voice, not your voice. Our hearthstones essentially act like little video phones if you will. You can talk to anyone that has one (everyone in the guild does) and you can see your fellow guild mate’s basic surrounding through the stone, and they can see you as well (unless you wish to obscure the vision, in which case you can always say *covers her stone*). That being said, you can use *these symbols between text* to describe things. Some examples below:nn*You can see the trees blowing violently in the background, as Aitana’s hair billows in the wind* A storm is coming… I best seek shelter.nn*The sound of billowing wind can be heard in the background and the crack of thunder* A storm is coming… I best seek shelter.nn*You can see through the stone Aitana‘s eyes become serious as the clouds behind her become black and violent* A storm is coming… I best seek shelter.nn5. It is generally understood that Raid chat and 5 man party dungeon chat is OOC. It is necessary and understood that technical information needs to be communicated, however, how your character acts and/or /says can be and should be in character. If you are a member in an rp guild for example, and during a raid you get naked and dance around and burp on members… it may be hard for them to take you seriously IC at other times. nn6. Need inspiration for your character? Look to novels, movies or tv shows for ideas! Study people and characters that you want your character to be like, and then talk and act like them! If you want to find people to run heroics, how might the person you are basing your character off of ask something like that, and how would they say it? What would their mannerisms be like? What might they emote or say?nn7. Consistency. Whether it causes conflict or not, let your character be who they are and let it play out, after all, it is what makes rp interesting. Do not, however, allow your character to be braver than what it really would be because you know it isn’t real. For example, you might have a cocky fighter type character who is rude and doesn’t obey the rules. While he might be rude, in reality he probably would back down if he could sense his behavior was annoying his clan, and his clan was made up of undead warlocks and orc warriors that would break him without a second thought. Nyx is a tribe and a warband, and if you look at it visually, it can be pretty intimidating.. Would your character really be so brash amongst these type of people? Consider it. nn_________________________________________________nnAllright, that’s all I have for now, and I encourage people to post questions and or suggestions and more helpful rp info here. After the event we had the other night there was concern that some of our members may not really understand how to rp, so I threw this together over morning coffee in hopes it might be helpful. It is in no way intended to be a thorough guide or anything of the like, just some helpful suggestions I thought up which could certainly be added to if anyone feels the need. Thanks!
