What to Say, When to Say It...

Postby Asarelah » Tue Aug 17, 2010 11:59 am

I am trying, without much success, to change my conversations on my characters, on the standard things they normally say. And am not finding much in the way of resources on the web on what a WoW race would say under a particular circumstance....nnIn particular, personally I am looking for Blood Elf, Tauren and Orc for:n1. Guild Member Arrivaln2. Guild Member Returnn3. Guild Member Departuren4. Guild Member Achievementsn5. Guild Member LevelingnnAnd any and other various things common place to say for that particular Race. I know that is a very rudimentary beginning, but I have to start somewhere, and for me, that is the place....nnLocomono whispered me some ideas for what an Orc would say in particular situations (and I will try and find that and post it here). Cobriana either whispered me a link or posted it somewhere, and I can't find that.... being busy at the time.nnLoco also suggested to me that I go around poking NPC's to see what their verbal reactions might be. Some of them weren't very nice!! And I suspect the Alliance might get down right ugly about it if I did that!!nnI would appreciate it VERY much if Lore would put together an official lexicon of things that each Race might say and their meanings.nnPlease !!nn*looks hopeful, trying to make clear this is NOT an order, but a much desired and needed request*

I can't say what a Tauren would say for each instance. Like people, our avatars are reflections of our selves. So really, what would the personality of your character say?nnHowever, here is an exert on Tauren from WoWwiki:nnThe plains of Kalimdor have long been a home to these tremendous nomads. The tauren are a race of shamans, hunters, and warriors who long ago developed a complex culture and system of living without the aid of stonework, steel or conquest. This is not to say that the tauren are a race of pacifists, for when they are angered they are capable of retaliating with swift and decisive brutality. Tauren are, in a word, stoic, embodying the strong and silent type with their quiet contemplation. This introspective air combined with their immense size can lead a person to understand as to "why" many regard the tauren as a wise and dangerous race. Tauren rarely speak unless there is a true reason to, preferring to act instead of talk. However, once a tauren has learned to interact with a companion, there seems to be a more open and enthusiastic exchange of words. Since tauren warm slowly to non-tauren, they are usually silent and may sometimes appear brooding. If anything, a person could attribute the silence of the tauren on the strife of recent times. Tauren have no love for bloodshed, as their deep spiritual beliefs do not have a place for warfare. The elders of a tribe solve most issues, or two tauren might resolve a conflict with a ritual challenge resembling a duel. Having become members of the Horde, the introspective race has been involved in more and more conflict, creating a demand for tauren warriors and healers. Many must spend time putting great thought into the actions they perform on the field of battle. Taking another life, whether it is man or beast, is an act filled with great significance and responsibility to the tauren.

*smiles at Cobriana* That first little Orcish section are the things that I told Lah in whispers. When it comes to races other than Orcs Lah the easiest thing to do is just say what you normally would but say it in the races language(you could even ask how they see what you type to get ideas for some phrases). After a while everyone will start learning Taurae or Thalassian. Maybe at first you could say it in orcish and your toons native language to get everyone used to it. Someone who has the books(l borrowed and returned the ones I have read) could dig through for how some of the races converse.

Lah, another thing to consider in your greetings/etc. is your own character. Just because you are playing a Tauren does not mean your Tauren is a stereotypical bovine hanging out in Thunder Bluff and eating oats. I mean, it would be fine if your character was that, but it isn't the only way to be. For example, you may be a Tauren that was orphaned at a young age, and grew up with pirates- that would give you a whole new way of speaking, far varied from the citizens of Thunder Bluff. Maybe you were a slave in a mine and your speech was influenced by your dwarven captors- it could be anything really. Basically I'm saying don't feel like you have to be pigeon holed into a cookie cutter character due to your character's race. nnWhat I would avoid saying are things that don't line up with the game's lore or history, ie: modern day speech. Most of the NPC's in wow do speak with a pretty modern dialogue and vocabulary, so you don't have the pressure of speaking in midevial tones like you have in other rp games, but you should still consider the kind of world you live in and what you might or might not use or know of as slang, etc. nnAnyhow, hope this helps and frees you up a little.
