The history of Caim

This story is not one of joy or fairy tales. It is not a story of knights in shining armor or damsels in distress....but it is a story of loss, courage, love and true sacrifice. I could start from the very beginning but I feel there is no need. Back then he was but a boy, living with his brother and parents. Back then the world was not much different from now, there were wars, and conflict but it didn't' affect this small child, this little elf with blue eyes.

We shall move forward and discuss a time in this elf's life that was the start of it all, the start of his journey, the first page if you would, in the history book of his life.

The city of Silvermoon was always one of sheer beauty. The tree's glimmered and sparkled like the Arcane magic the sun well provided us...it was a happy time. I was walking out from the inn when I noticed two elves idly chatting. One a male with silver hair that shined brighter the the fleece on his robes. The other a female, with blond hair and a royal blue sash around her neck. It was easy to tell how someone trained themselves by what they wore. The male a wizard, the female a archer...and one of high rank from the golden laced bow strapped to her back. I couldn't help but watch as the two talked, both smiling wide, laughing from time to time. Youth...something I miss but we all grow old, even us elves.

Over the next few days I couldn't help but see the same two together time and time again. I could tell by now the two were close....well at least one would think looking at the two but each time she left to go about her work the others face would just smile...a smile that a man of my age knew there were deeper feelings behind it, feelings that only he shared.

He was in love with her.

I soon came to learn the mans name. Caim Eversong. I was a bit surprised such a easy going man was the ancestor of the elf who's name was giving to the woods outside the city. The Eversong name wasn't by any means one of royalty or wealth. It was simply one of the original founders, who's fame was quickly forgotten when the Sunstrider's took up the throne. The female archer was obvious to anyone who payed attention to the defensive forces of Silvermoon. She was one, if not thee best ranger these woods have ever seen. Every day the two would meet up for lunch before going off to there own things.

Caim would often meet with his twin brother, who later I learned was named Rasler. They were twins but Rasler was slightly taller, and didn't have the same friendly feel that Caim did. He was more secluded, but by the twin daggers sheathed at his sides it only made sense being a rouge. There parents, Belle and Tamaki Eversong were just as fair as there children. Belle with reddish brown hair tied back, Tamaki with golden hair cut short. They lived in a decent sized home just west of the Bazaar. They were a happy family..a care free one. But as I said at the begging of my story....this was one of loss....and like all us High elves...the Eversongs would suffer loss.

I wish I could continue to tell you of these two elves, these two youths enjoying life with there family's but something happened none of us ever would of imagined. Caim had awoken like any other day, doing his morning things, reading and left to go meet her where they always did but she wasn't there. It didn't take long for him to find out why.

Eversong....Silvermoon was under attack.

But it wasn't that fact that made this day famous...it was who was leading the attack. Caim had only heard the name in royal talk or of admirers. Arthas...the same Arthas who was once prince of Loderon, the very prince who murdered his father, the very prince, now Death Knight that lead the scourge.

She was gone, sent to the front lines to fight against Arthas...it had been hours but no reports came back. Caim struggled with the thoughts that ran through his head, was she ok, why hasn't she sent back word. The city was in a uproar as it's walls felt the barrage hit. It was sudden, and unexpected. Noone ever thought the army would fail, that no word would be sent back...but no word made it back because no one was left alive to give it.....Caim for the first time in his life felt tears run down his cheeks. She was gone and as he and his family fled the city he caught a small glimpse of the man who took her away from him.

Arthas.... Standing with a blue glowing blade in his hand...a banshee at his right side. Caim couldn't help but take pity on the creature, as it obeyed its master he could feel sadness from it.

But there was little time to mourn her, the Eversongs group was cut off, a terrible scar in the land where the undead rose. They were merciless. Tamaki and Rasler amongst other fathers, sons, brothers took the front line, charging the undead around them. Leaving Caim to protect Belle and the others that were too weak or scared to fight....it was the last time he saw his father and brother alive.

The small group headed south, towards the river. Fires lit the sky behind them as they climbed the hill. Caim glanced back only for a second to see what was left of his home. The wall broken in..screams of war and those of pain and agony filled the forest. His home was lost, the love of his life, lost....I wish I could say that was the last of his suffering but it i'd be lying.

They weren't safe yet. The scourge left a scar leading as far as the eye could see, past the river into the thicker woods south of it. The east sanctum lay in ruins as it was ripped in half in the undead advance. It is there...that Caim would suffer his final loss....that he'd witness true sacrifice.

There group suffered attack one after another from scourge that were left behind....at least that's what Caim thought. It would be sometime later that he'd realize the true horror or Arthas' powers. They were so close to safety...so close to continuing on. The rune stone that watched over the woods was where they were going to take up shelter. But as they arrived all they witnessed was a dull rock amongst dirt that no longer gave life..tree's that no longer shimmered.

They were met by a hellish ghoul...standing ten some feet in the air holding a chain with a massive hook...its body sewn together, its organs spilling out of the hole on it's stomach. This was it for him...for this young Eversong. As he heard the chain rattle in the air as it swiped, taking out body after body Caim closed his eyes and awaited what was to come...only to hear these words.

"Live my son....live for your family...I love you."

No one quite knows, nor ever was able to explain why people do things out of instinct. But this...was out of love. Caim shot open his eyes only to see his mother standing in front of him, the words spoken into his ear only seconds before he felt the spell hit him. And in a flash...he was gone. The teleport spell had sent him far back into the hills to the east of the woods. He fell to his knees...he was alone...

True sacrifice.

He cried out in anger and sorrow, slamming his fists into the ground over and over. "Why me..why only me!" he yelled, only stopping when his knuckles bled. The lone survivor..the last Eversong. It was then that I stepped in. I could no longer let this poor man suffer alone.

A great rush came over the young elf as he suddenly found himself brought to the encampment Kael' Thas and the rest of us set up on the far stretches of the forest remains. It was here that I took Caim under my wing. It was here that he renounced himself as a mage, taking on the dark arts of the Warlock...a warlock like myself. At first I refused him. His reasons were wrong, seeking revenge against the demons by controlling demons of his own. It was a excuse any other man would refuse..but in time I gave in. I had seen what happened to this young elf with green eyes...

With the sun well gone we high elves were no longer controllers of the Arcane...we were slaves to it. I witnessed with my own eyes as the addiction drew some of our own mad. Even the great Kael' Thas gave in, turning against his own to find us "salvation" dawning us...Blood elves. But his story is not the one I have been telling so let us look past the prince's actions for now.

He grew fast in power, perhaps it was his hatred for the world that drives the inner demons inside him. I was scared for his soul but something in him kept himself from completely being taking into the darkness, being a slave to that which he once controlled. He grew so fast....I was proud of him but all the wile seeing him grew brought nothing but sorrow to my heart. This once young man now of age showed no smiles, hair that no longer shined. He was alone, and closed off. For the 5 years that I trained him never once did he smile. And after I thought him all he could he thanked me, and ventured off into the world...to claim his revenge.

I've grown old you see, and it is never easy watching youth live for such sad reasons as Caim....every day I've watched him from his side, masking myself as one of his slaves. I guess I grew fond of this young elf so I gladly act as his shield, act as his guardian.

A year has passed since he left but things have changed...he seems to have found a new family. This guild, these people who follow a dark lady, Nyx. He's smiling again. At first they were forced smiles but then he met this person...To think he'd fall in love again. It makes me smile...this young elf I've watched over, who's pain I've witnessed...who's sorrow I've seen be replaced with feelings.

To this lover of his...you have my thanks, I wish I could tell you in person but I've kept this form too long...i'm embraced to say I can no longer return to my normal self but you have my thanks...you will always have my thanks. I cannot leave Caim's side but when you are near I will protect the both of you with my life. I will protect the family he calls Nyx, the friends he's made, these champions of the Horde.

Perhaps someone will find this book someday and learn the story of Caim, and know what made him the man he is today....what made him this strong Sin'Dorei...this brave man with green eyes.
