World of Advertisements

Postby Aitana » Thu Jul 08, 2010 3:27 pm

I am not looking forward to this.nnhttp://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/threa ... 0920&sid=1nnFrom Rhooja on the Emerald Dream IRC channel:nn[13:05] <+Rhooja> When they offered race changes, some rose up and said, "This is a harbinger of things to come!"n[13:05] <+Rhooja> I laughed. Silly, I thought.n[13:05] <+Rhooja> When they offered faction changes, some rose up and said, "This is a harbinger of things to come!"n[13:05] <+Rhooja> I laughed. Ridiculous, I thought.n[13:05] <+Rhooja> When they offered pets and ponies in the store, some rose up and said, "This is a harbinger of things to come!"n[13:05] <+Rhooja> I laughed. Optional, I spouted.n[13:05] <+Rhooja> When they offered ReadID, many rose up and said, "This is a harbinger of things to come!"n[13:05] <+Rhooja> I laughed. Uneasily, I laughed.n[13:05] <+Rhooja> When they forced forum names on us, we all rose up and said, "Enough!"n[13:05] <+Rhooja> I hung my head. I, and many like me, enabled this day to happen. I am so very, very ashamed.nnI think this is too true.

Edit:nnAfter looking at the ads on the forums, they're sponsored by msn.com. Microsoft does own the Massive company. So, no real worry (yet).

I'm curious to know why Microsoft being a part of this puts you at ease.nnBecause the advertising on WorldofWarcraft.com isn't too bad? I have the feeling you know something I don't about the subject.nnThe only thing I can imagine for in game advertising is being blasted with gold spammer text, where the difference is that the ad is correctly spelled and the content for sale is legal.

nnBecause those advertisements have been there for years on the forums, a place that could be legally considered apart of "the game" (as in order to post, you have to have a game account and character), and would fall under the Massive clause in the Terms of Use. In fact, I would put paychecks on wagering that that is exactly what is meant by the Massive clause. Microsoft owns Massive, and the ads on the forums are from MSN.com. See the correlation?nnThe whole RealID fiasco has everyone pointing fingers at shadows in the night and are calling them monsters.

Yeah, you're probably right. They just lost a lot of trust and good will the Real ID shenanigan about posting real names on the forums.

I don't have a problem with the ads on the forums and website either. They are tasteful, and relevant.nnThe last thing I want is to see a banner ad in a game I pay to play, though. I'd rather have a higher subscription (if there was no other option). I can't even stand to play the game in window mode because the window frame and rest of my desktop cripples my immersion

Firefox with Adblock and NoScript addons makes me a happy forum goer.
