The hearthstones are given out by the higher mages within the guild. You can use these to teleport obviously, but also to communicate with the guild. There is also a second phase to our hearthstone (( party )), which allows an even close bond between members, that we can actually feel where they are located anywhere in the world.
The third phase in the hearthstone is a personal connection between one another (( whisper )). By using the power of the stone, one can see, and feel emotions of the other, and only you are able to hear them.
Using the hearthstone often, can cause dizziness, distraction and even headaches. Use it only when needed.
This is the most common explanation I've seen people give as well. I still like to pretend I'm yelling into a "Ricola!" horn though.
