RP resource: events! stories! stuff!

Postby Darkclouded » Thu Aug 19, 2010 8:35 pm

The RP resource that it took the entire time I was making the other three to plan, this is the one that isn't just as "if you're making a character similar to this" or a "this may help you in RP" this is to MAKE RP.nnEvent planning, story:nnMake it correct to lore: one thing many RPers overlook is the actual game lore. players in the game are actually very powerful lore wise but this is no excuse to "god mod" by saying they are invincible or important enough to the overall lore to be the direct descendant of someone very powerful. arthas had no kids, deathwing's are mostly dead, and you are NOT (especially if you are hinik) a chosen champion of the titans. in game lore is best studied a bit before you actually make an event to make sure you aren't rewriting it for your own convenience or overextending the power of a character.nnnmake it open to a bit of influence: many RPers are content to be in an event or story without actually making their own but a core aspect of being an RPer is creativity, whether admitted or not a lot of RPers really want to be able to have a bit of influence on the story. as such some of the best events are the ones that give characters a little room to improvise, just make sure it isn't taken too far so that the story is completely taken over. many events are seen as failed because some character decided "why should we lose this fight?" or "why are THEY the leader of this group?". so give them some room but don't let it get to their heads.nnnmake it fun, make it understandable: while it may be simple to start an event off by having a character have one line and then moving on this isn't exactly seen as entertaining, a story will hopefully have a bit of story and a bit of interaction in every part, it doesn't have to be a fight it just has to be something other than "go here then go there". Similarly it is seen as a good idea to type up a bit of the event's story before starting it so people will be able to understand what is going on, it's hard to get into the story if you get into the middle of a battle with half the story behind it unexplained.nnnnLocations and timing: nnthe right setting for the right part: sometimes you will see someone running around thinking to themselves about how a place looks in terms of RP, or how the lore would fit to a bit of a story. This is because they are planning out where key events in a story or event should happen, the right ambiance or story of an area can be all the difference between a story people can get into and a simple act.nntimes and participation: it's kind of hard to have an event if the people who want to come would be asleep at that time. look at the schedules of the people who participate in events like yours and place your event times accordingly. This will ensure that not only are you able to invite people more easily but also have people look at your event and sign up thinking "oh hey this guy put the event where I can get to it".nnnCasting: (no not spells. people)nnthe right RPer to the right part: if you have some people who volunteer before the event is completely made and you have some roles key to the story then put 2 and 2 together. need an evil mastermind? ask the evil RPer, need a hero? ask the good guy RPer, need someone to give a bit of story between fights? get the neutral RPer. all of your choices for roles can alter the story in interesting ways. for example if I got a role as an evil character I would play the most random villain possible, some may find this entertaining as I might say something that another more collected evil RPer wouldn't.nnThe mechanics of the event: (actual story, key roles and items, so on and so forth)nninstance bosses in events: The bosses for instances are occasionally seen in events as fights in the story, generally fought for having done something wrong or being a threat to whatever is being planned. However it is important to know that unless you have a good reasoning for them still being alive after being beaten up by 5 rather easily angered adventurers you should probably only try the bossfight approach once. (my favorite reason is not checking for a pulse before you loot them and leave)nnspecial mechanics: some events such as a few of those made in the ward of lore have special things in them such as an item from an instance actually being used in the story or an addon being used to add perspective to something in the event. while using these special mechanics can be challenging at times and is advised only for people who have studied them for a while it is also rather interesting and sometimes improves participation in your event.nnnProblem solving (the bane of event and story makers everywhere):nnDrama: as with anything there are times when people react oddly to something, for instance actually taking something in context as being aimed at them or changing their opinion of someone based on their role in an event. this is, luckily enough, not as common here in nyx but it still happens occasionally. as such there are times when, to ensure the continued success of an event the event maker must deal with some of this. talk to those participating in your event and get their opinions, if something is wrong you may need to spend some time dealing with it so it doesn't go out of hand.nnKeeping story OUT of OOC (and vice-versa): to avoid the occasional player blurting out the big secret in the story of an event because they heard you talking about it or were there in planning it, you need to make it clear, they are NOT to take something out of context as an excuse to tell everyone "I know who did it". this can hurt the continuity and story of an event and rather spoil some of the other elements of it. similarly as in the topic above you must avoid having people who know some facts about the event from telling those who shouldn't know them. it's quite annoying having someone you just explained the "don't tell any characters in context" thing to turn around and tell someone who doesn't understand that point in a casual conversation.nnDealing with griefers: this one is fairly simple, although still annoying to deal with. if the griefer is on your faction report them and put them on your ignore list (this IS an RP server after all). if they AREN'T on your faction then it's more fun, form an angry mob hunt them down then have a priest mind control them into a volcano! (not to be confused with a vast canyon with lava in it, you can't call it a sacrifice if it isn't a volcano) nn(this is pretty much everything I can think of on this subject at the moment. as such I'm opening it up to comments from RPers as well as saying I will add to it if I think of anything)nSincerely,n Dark

Dies the beast.
Dies the king.
In fire's path, dies everything.
PS: Yes. You actually do have to run faster than the lion.
